Extra information:
The fragment preserves part of a moulded thistle motif beneath a scalloped decorative border, rendered in a rich cobalt-blue glaze over a cream-to-buff ceramic body. Thistle design was widely employed in late Victorian decorative arts, particularly in ceramics influenced by Scottish national and Gothic Revival design traditions. The moulded relief work, curved profile, and scalloped edging suggest the sherd originated from the upper section of a decorative domestic vessel such as a jardinière, spill vase, ornamental jug, or wall pocket rather than utilitarian tableware. Cobalt glazes of this type were especially popular in Victorian art pottery due to their vivid colour and ability to emphasise moulded decoration.
