The design closely resembles that of W. R. Midwinter Ltd., established by William Robinson Midwinter around 1910 at Bournes Bank, Burslem. The business grew quickly, relocating to the Albion Works on Navigation Road, Burslem, in 1914. During the First World War, William Midwinter served in the Royal Navy, leaving the company's management to his wife. The business continued to expand throughout the 1920s and 1930s, and in 1932, it was incorporated as W. R. Midwinter Ltd. with William Midwinter and A. T. Godwin serving as directors.
