Blue and white ceramics have been produced in China for many years. In the early 19th century, the style inspired a production movement in England. Influential artists such as James McNeill Whistler collected these ceramics. The growing middle class also collected the patterns to demonstrate their cultural taste, and the colour of blue and white china was a welcome addition to the typically dark Victorian interior.
