Blue and white ceramics have been produced in China for many years on many different fabrics. In the early 19th century, the style inspired a production movement in England. Influential artists like James McNeill Whistler collected these ceramics. The growing middle class also collected the patterns to demonstrate their cultural tastes, and the colour of blue and white china was a welcome addition to the typically dark Victorian interior.
This earthenware fabric was the first pottery ever made and dates back about 9,000 years. It can vary in colour from grey and buff to red and black.
