Blue and white ceramics have been produced in China for many centuries. In the early 19th century, this style inspired a production movement in England. Influential artists such as James McNeill Whistler collected these ceramics, and the growing middle class also purchased blue and white wares to demonstrate their cultural taste. The colour of Blue and White China was a welcome contrast to the typically dark Victorian interior.
